Witness the Honda 'Project P' -A conceptualised pickup truck based on Honda Civic Type R

The pickup truck market is poised to grow in coming and the growth is attributed to the increased utility of the pickup trucks.  The demand for the pickup trucks is maximum in the U.S. market and all the Japanese automakers are aggressively striving to carve a niche for themselves.  Japanese pickup models like Honda Ridgeline have already gained popularity by proving worthy competitors like the Ford Ranger. Now, Honda engineers have conceptualized a pickup truck model that is based on the Honda Civic Type R hatchback.  The conceptual model has been named as ‘Project P’ by the U.K.-based engineers.

The idea of launching a pickup based on the Civic Type R design sounds like a good idea. However, car enthusiasts will be disappointed to know that the conceptualized pickup is just a part of a fun project and Honda has no plans to put ‘Project P’ into production. Nevertheless, it is worth to take a look at how the project was conceived.

Unleashing the creative powers

Honda’s special projects division at Swindon allowed its passionate engineers to take their creativity to the next level. The fantastic ‘Project P’ was a result of the creative exercise and now the creative geniuses are planning to test the model on the Nürburgring racing track.  The engineers are particularly interested to check whether the Honda ‘Project P’ proves to be the fastest front-wheel drive pickup.

The model details

The Honda ‘Project P’ was built in the factory that manufactures Civic Type R.  The pickup truck has the same 2.0-litre turbocharged engine that delivers a power of 306 hp and a torque of 295 pound-feet. The engine will be paired to a 6-speed manual transmission system and the pickup can speed from 0-62 mph in just 6 seconds. The Project P has a top speed of more than 165 mph.

The Project P was designed by removing the roof aft of the front doors and by modifier the rear spoiler to ease the loading and unloading. Previously, BMW and Nissan had conceptualized pickup trucks based on M3 and Leaf.  Do you think that the Honda ‘Project P’ will do well in the market if it is put into production?
